Summer is not as wonderful for Mathew Higby as one would think, for a twelve-year-old boy with a boat that is. Matty is lonely for companionship; in short, he is bored. Nevertheless, he has Pokey and he has James Creek, and he has his chart, making him mobile, at least. Then Samantha Baxter comes along and turns his summer upside down and inside out. None of his imagined adventures could compete with having her around, especially since she sinks his boat in the first five minutes of knowing him.
The island, the lighthouse, the creek and the boat all change; once the pony, the lighthouse keeper and the young redhead get involved in Matty’s existence making life and living pretty interesting. At first he does not know what to do, then later does not know what he’ll do when it’s over.
